    Froze at my place, now what to do with sample canola?

    This morning (sept 6) my thermometer shows 2 degrees, but there is ice on all the vehicle windows. My canola is late (only 1/2 swathed) and will most likely be sample grade.

    Some companies have basis contracts available that have specified discounts for grades. In particular one is offering $10 under for #1 canola and and additional $85 penalty for sample canola. This would be 95/tonne discount. With the frosts in Sask and Man earlier and some frost in my area of southern Alberta, will there be a burdensome supply of sample canola which will make it worth even less?

    Those of you who have had sample canola in years when there was lots of it, what was a normal discount, and could you even find people to buy it?

    Poorboy;

    Ice on vehicles does not mean sample canola... always.

    On AUG 9, 2004 we had ice on windsheilds... with no damage to any plants.

    If your thermometer showed plus 2C, it is unlikely you have any canola damage... especially for the swathed crop. Just get the rest swathed and hope for the best!

      I agree with Tom, you canola might have only dropped one grade, and the discount for a two is usually around $15/tonne. Different companies use different grade discounts once you get past grade two. It will pay to shop around, and the grade discounts they are quoting now will probably change throughout the year as they did in 2002.

                    Can get overnight quotes (10 minute delay) off CBOT website.

                    http://www.cbot.com/cbot/pub/page/0,3181,963,00.html

                    Clicking the commodity (soybeans, corn, etc.) brings up the previous day close. Click on electronic on the top of the table and this will take you to the overnight quotes.
