Grew the crop with a very limited root system only having the top foot or less of dirt accessible due to the dry season?.

I am wondering about this as well. Some of the durum has pieball. Did all the rain weighted to the start of the season prevented adequate rooting and nutrient uptake. Canola too.

Which varieties furrow. So far, I am not too happy with L357, first time trying it. Didnt seem to handle the heat well and bloody hard to thrash out compared to what we have used before.

Perhaps better pod shatter trait but sacrifice yield and heat tolerance.

Should get to our better of 2 357 field tomorrow. Not expecting much!

Depending on how much early rain, it could have pushed nitrogen deeper, which roots didn't get to? That one I find unlikely, but anything is possible i suppose. More likely, there was just enough rain to maintain a 12" moist zone which got awful bloody hot and dry about the time the head is filling. Nitrogen then gasses off?

Another possibility cereal wise, is a large amount of late stools? Regardless of fertility rates, I've never seen stools (at least here) attain much in the way of protein. The rushed nature of their filling, as well as semi-dead main plants seem to be incapable of making protein.

Regrowth on 340 4-5 times as much as 505 post harvest ? Turning yellow now
Hoping this quarter is an anomaly as we still have 3 quarters of 340 to do

Data still just starting to come in locally . Won’t comment on other areas as for the huge variability this year .
