    Black rust/dust in canola

    I know it’s not cool to swath canola anymore but I am anyway. I’ve never seen this black dust all over the swather like I’m seeing this fall. Anyone know what’s up with that ?

    Could be alt black spot . Seen it before at late staging . Can cover swather with that black / dark rusty dust . It can explode in certain conditions like this past few weeks in areas

        We’ve seen it coating absolutely everything in lentils in past. Just a guess but I’d say black mold spores, extremely combustible. We had continuous combine fires when combining those black spore lentils. Kept a water truck close by at all times.

          Have had that in green peas as well, swather/header combine covered in black dust.

          Yes, good alert that it is very combustible.

            From the Canola council website .

            One thing of note , watch “straight cut” varieties if you’re in areas under these conditions.
            And most areas in western Canada are now under these conditions after this past week . Especially the main canola growing areas with 99% of the canola still out in field .
            We started noticing it yesterday as we started swathing our later canola and hailed canola from June 25 th .
            Was non existent a week ago

              On another note , if you have late canola still greenish , watch for diamond backs . Several late seeded and hailed crops have been sprayed NE of here . May be too late in most cases . We seen damage on ours but was minimal and the swather hitting it today .

                Interesting info on the black spot symptoms. When splitting pods I did notice that many pods would split far easier than normal. Hopefully we can get this swathed canola combined before the wind shells it all out in the swath. It is a Dekalb variety with “pod shatter resistance” bred into it. Definitely the riper patches that have the dark/ dirty look to them.

                    Hopefully there is no big winds the next 2-3 weeks .
                    Shatter loses could be ugly , and a lot of thin swaths in many fields
