Surprised to see the oats weren't up to his belly.
Cereals here are the shortest I have ever seen on the little that has been harvested.
Yields aren't terrible but somewhat less than some had hoped.

If there was limited rain and limited snow , there will be very little crop, it is evident everywhere, including here in areas , has been since June 20th
Any decent crop here was grown on snow catch and or a lucky rain or two
If you had neither, you’re at or below 50% ave yields on all crops .
Canola worse than cereals , but that a function of a flowering crop . Wheat held on better. But that’s expected.

Was north of Craigmyle on Friday looking at a swather. In talking to the farmer pea yields were averaging 8 bushels per acre. 3.5 inches rainfall at his farm for the year so far. Pastures in the area with short to non existent. On the way home we passed a farmer pre-harvesting canola. It didn’t look too bad, probably 2 feet tall(60 cm). I am always amazed at what corn will do with less rain. Certainly grows more product.

SF sorry to hear about your dad. Sounds like he had a good life and enjoyed what he did. Can’t ask for more than that.
Just pulled the bulls from the “hopefully†bred heifers yesterday and moved them to the last piece of grass for them. My boy is trying to ignore the fact school is a week away kinda like starting feeding is only a couple weeks away for me. Neither is looking forward to the inevitable……..
Started desiccating peas and the hail and resulting disease sure did a number on them. Going to start swathing barley today that also got hail two weeks ago. We’ve had more hail damage in the last two years than any other so next year I think we’ll have to add it to the insurance. Very disappointing to see more damage so close to harvest but on the bright side the trucker (me) will have an easier job😉
Went to the Ukrainian Village by Vegreville with some friends and the kids got to see some history in action. They enjoyed the blacksmith who pounded out some mini horseshoes for them since it was a drizzling day and we mostly had the place to ourselves. Interesting to see the 100 year old elevator and how little things have changed since then.
The steers are doing better than ever. Definitely the best performing crop this year. The grass that is there sure has some power this year. Dealing with a bit of pneumonia but the vet is saying everyone seems to have a bunch of odd things happening lately.
Every corn field around here seems to be great. Definitely impresses me more all the time. Hopefully Jack Frost stays away to let it fill the cobs nicely.
Good luck everyone. Just the odd field off in the neighbourhood so far. Forecast looks decent so it’s go timeðŸ€

Weather forecasts this week:
Our hailed canola in Killam looks like it will be ready to swath by the end of the week with all the warm weather… perhaps Wednesday starting on Pea desiccation… hail cut our crops height by half… will be a challenging harvest… the wheat needs 3 weeks to fill and ripen…. At least 3 weeks lost to the hail storm…
Blessings , Safety, and Wisdom
