    "World’s longest suspension bridge opens
18 MAR, 2022 BY ROB HAKIMIAN
The 1915Çanakkale Bridge, the world’s longest suspension bridge situated in north-west Turkey, opens today, five years to the day that construction began.

The £1bn project, constructed by a joint venture between DL E&C (formerly Daelim), Limak, SK ecoplant and Yapı Merkezi, was completed at the end of February. It is being inaugurated by President Erdogan today, March 18, not only as the five-year anniversary of the start of construction but also to mark the 107th anniversary of the Çanakkale (Gallipoli) Naval Victory of 1915.

Situated just south of the towns of Lapseki and Gelibolu, the bridge spans the Çanakkale Strait, about 10 km south of the Sea of Marmara.

The bridge has a main span of 2,023m which makes it the longest suspension bridge in the world, taking the record from the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Kobe, Japan that was completed in 1998 with a mid-span length of 1,991m. The 2,023m span is no accident – it’s a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Turkish republic, which will be in 2023.

The total length of the bridge is 4,608m, with towers 318m high and a road width of 45m with three-lanes in both directions. The clearance under the bridge is 69.3m."
