China warns Walmart and Sam's Club over Xinjiang products
    Fri, December 31, 2021, 12:27 AM
BEIJING (Reuters) -China's anti-graft agency on Friday accused U.S. retail giant Walmart Inc and its Sam's Club chain of "stupidity and shorted-sightedness" after Chinese news outlets reported Sam's Club had removed Xinjiang-sourced products from stores.

Last week, Sam's Club came under fire in China after several news outlets shared videos and screenshots on the Weibo social media platform that they said showed products from the far-western Chinese region of Xinjiang had been removed from the store's online app.

The social media row erupted after U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law on Dec. 23 legislation banning imports from Xinjiang over concern about forced labour there.

Walmart is the latest foreign firm to be tripped up by Western pressure over Beijing's treatment of Uyghurs and other minority Muslims in Xinjiang and China's importance as a market and supply base.

China rejects accusations of forced labour or any other abuses in Xinjiang.

Neither Walmart nor Sam's Club has made public statements on the backlash against them in China, and Walmart did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.

The ruling Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) accused Sam's Club of boycotting Xinjiang products and trying to "muddle through" the controversy by remaining silent.

"To take down all products from a region without a valid reason hides an ulterior motive, reveals stupidity and short-sightedness, and will surely have its own bad consequences," it said on its website.

China is a huge market for Walmart, which generated revenue of $11.43 billion in the country during its fiscal year that ended Jan. 31. Of 423 retail units Walmart operates in China, 36 are Sam's Club stores, according to its website.

A search for popular Xinjiang goods like raisins on the Sam's Club China store app did not yield any relevant results, but neither did searches for products from other places, such as Fujian tea, according to a Reuters review on Wednesday.

    OUT OF STOCK?

Chinese media outlets have cited Sam's Club customer service representatives explaining that the products were not removed but rather out of stock.

The CCDI on Friday called that a "self-deceptive excuse" and said the chain should respect China's position on Xinjiang if it wanted to "stand firm in the Chinese market".

It is not unusual for a foreign brand to be targeted by Chinese social media users or official outlets, and the impact can be damaging.

Earlier this week, the Weibo hashtag "Sam's Club card cancellation" went viral, with over 470 million hits. On Friday, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported that domestic rivals had organised campaigns to promote goods from Xinjiang.

In July, Swedish fashion retailer H&M reported a 23% drop in local currency sales in China for its March-May quarter after it was hit by a consumer boycott in March for stating publicly that it did not source products from Xinjiang.

This month, U.S. chipmaker Intel faced similar calls after telling its suppliers not to source products or labour from Xinjiang, prompting it to apologise for "the trouble caused to our respected Chinese customers, partners and the public".

On Friday, CCDI accused H&M, Intel, and Sam's Club of collaborating with "western anti-China forces" to destabilise Xinjiang by suppressing and boycotting products from the region.

"These Western companies, which once boasted that they were free from political interference, have slapped themselves in the face with their own actions."

Putin threatened Biden with a complete collapse of US-Russia relations if he launches more sanctions over Ukraine

Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin spoke on Thursday as Russia appeared close to invading Ukraine.

Putin told Biden that sanctions over Ukraine could mean a total rupture in US-Russia relations.

Biden urged Putin to ease tensions but said the US would respond if Russia invades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned President Joe Biden in a phone call on Thursday that relations between the two countries could collapse if the US imposes sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

The Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said after the call that Putin told Biden that sanctions "could lead to a complete breakdown in ties between our countries," Reuters reported.

"Our president also mentioned that it would be a mistake that our descendants would see as a huge error," he said.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday that Biden told Putin that Russia needed to "de-escalate tensions with Ukraine." She said Biden warned that the US would respond if Russia presses ahead with a Ukraine invasion.

"President Biden reiterated that substantive progress in these dialogues can occur only in an environment of de-escalation," she said.

"He made clear that the United States and its allies and partners will respond decisively if Russia further invades Ukraine."

According to Axios, a senior US official said that Biden also said the US and its allies could couple sanctions with increased NATO activity in eastern member states.

NATO operations in countries like Estonia and Latvia, which border Russia, have long frustrated Putin. He recently demanded that NATO leave eastern Europe altogether.

The US, Ukraine, and their allies are warning that Russia appears to be preparing to invade Ukraine, its neighbor, soon.

Russia has been building up troops and military equipment along the border.

Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula in 2014. Russia also supports armed separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.

The war between Russian-backed rebels and Ukrainian troops has killed more than 13,000 people in recent years.

Russia test-fires new hypersonic Tsirkon missiles from frigate, submarine

        Fri, December 31, 2021, 12:17 AM
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia test-fired around 10 new Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missiles from a frigate and two more from a submarine, Interfax news agency said on Friday citing northern fleet.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded the weapon as part of a new generation of unrivalled arms systems.

Putin has called a missile test, conducted last week, "a big event in the country's life", adding that this was "a substantial step" in increasing Russia's defence capabilities.

Some Western experts have questioned how advanced Russia's new generation of weapons is, while recognising that the combination of speed, manoeuvrability and altitude of hypersonic missiles makes them difficult to track and intercept.

Putin announced an array of new hypersonic weapons in 2018 in one of his most bellicose speeches in years, saying they could hit almost any point in the world and evade a U.S.-built missile shield.

U.S. at risk of paying 'unbearable price' over Taiwan - senior Chinese diplomat
          Wed, December 29, 2021, 10:24 PM
BEIJING (Reuters) - The United States is at risk of paying an "unbearable price" due to its actions over Taiwan, Wang Yi, state councillor and foreign minister, said in an interview with state media on Thursday.

China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and in the past two years has stepped up military and diplomatic pressure to assert its sovereignty claim, fuelling anger in Taipei and concern in Washington.

By "encouraging 'Taiwan independence' forces" the United States "not only puts Taiwan into an extremely dangerous situation but also exposes the United States to an unbearable price", Wang said.

Taiwan has emerged as a key factor in strained relations between China and the United States, the island's most important international backer and arms supplier despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

Taiwan says it is an independent country and vows to defend its freedom and democracy. China regularly describes the island as the most sensitive issue in its ties with the United States.

"Taiwan has no other way forward other than reunification with the mainland," said Wang.

While the United States recognises only one China, it is required by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself and has long followed a policy of "strategic ambiguity" on whether it would intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

Take everything made or packaged in China out of a Walmart and the remaining inventory would fit in a Subway.

Does China have to worry about embargoes?

I think they have strong repesentation that won't let anything happen without strong opposition.

Trump was always right about those bastards. The slave nation outcompeted everyone on manufactured goods with slave labour, intellectual property theft, and a phoney economy propped up by the ccp. Now they’ve attained such a critical mass and relevance to the rest of the world. However, they do not exist without the world buying their junk. That is about all we can do is quit buying.
