    Atmospheric Rivers

Never heard of these before. Now they seem to be a a common occurrence. Another one scheduled for Sierra Nevadas. Can we expect that in the spring? What would these do to volatility in the markets?

Believe it was called the Pineapple Express before. Atmospheric River sounds scarier and man made. If we get lucky enuf to get one in April it will definitely help crop prospects. We need the moisture. Just as long as it doesn’t hang around til July. That would definitely move markets.

Doing more research apparently they have recently been rated 1-5. With 5 being extreme like the one in B.C. Hope we only see 1-3.

We had that in 2010 around here . The rain gauge registered 36 inches that year. But it was called rain back then. There was one event we watched from 4 miles away that dumped 5 inches in two hours. Looked like a shower head from a distance.

If global temp are rising it would be reasonable to assume more evaporation from oceans. That may cause greater frequency of atmospheric rivers. We could be in for a wild ride.

Interesting , evaporation means the ocean levels would go down contrary to popular belief.

Only if glaciers were not melting. Of course most of this rain would flow back to the ocean. Perhaps it is only an increase in speed of the cycle and randomness.

They have been around for centuries, check out the earlier thread on this about the one that hit BC .

They typically move south into Northern California in December .
Check out the floods in the 1800’s in central California. They were very heavy .
But now that the name change I am sure it will be blamed on man made carbon or whatever .

I heard they were trying some weather modification to get more moisture. Maybe it is working.
