    CNN - Possible Shipping Collapse

    Covid restrictions on seafarers, truckers, workers are wreaking havoc on international shipping. Many sailors are stuck on ships for weeks and months. Boats float in harbours waiting for months to unload. Full containers are parked with no estimated load and unload dates. Truck drivers take several Covid tests and vaccinations as rules and requirements change from day to day. Goes without saying that supply chains are emptying. Living and doing business in an exporting country, you gotta wonder where this is going.

    You also gotta wonder who benefits from the inevitable collapse.

    The answer to that may help determine where this is going.

    The fallout is going to be cataclysmic.

    How ironic - the wealthiest countries will suffer the most and the poorer countries, the least impacted.

        Don't the poorest countries suffer the most that's where all this stuff is made now ? People going hungry and being poor has dropped off now for years so if world governments are trying to really fix things they are heading the wrong way. Maybe I heard wrong but GDP numbers increased in North America last month. To much stuff being hauled in 1 ton vans daily by guys that make more than guys driving big rigs. The estimated 50,000 shortage of class 1 drivers in North America is coming home to roost.

          Interesting comments. Why does everything have to move by truck? Why not load up a few more trains with containers?

            The CN and CP lines going along trans Canada are nothing but containers I guess with the reduction of branch lines more trucking needed out of rail yards. The days of a coal car and lumber car being dropped off at your local village are long gone.

              True I see that as well...They container train from Vancouver to the GTH near Regina , put the stuff on a truck and drive it back to Calgary. There is part of the problem.

              When the product is being shipped in from the coasts to the least populated area of the country after it has passed through the populated cities , it makes no sense.

              In the states they can have hubs and then load it to trucks destined to higher populated mid western cities. In canada that isn't the case. So the GTH will be a white elephant forever. Unless they force the use and creating shortages of drivers by inefficiencies. Oh and of course the 4 billion dollar irrigation project will make the GTH a success. A politician told me that a few years back.

                Passenger trains sit on siding till container train goes past. Wally's World and C-TIRE got more pull. Old pool elevator with no rail loads bulk into container with long conveyor than ships to Winnipeg to rail service to go to eastern Canada. That's 30 tonne at a time compared to 90 tonne in regular car with a lot more handling. Doesn't seem all that efficient to me but what do I know.

                    Quite a few old grey haired truckers have said screw it the only thing there pulling with there class 1 is there camper to the bush.
