Friday Crop Report on a Thursday!

Since we finished harvesting two weeks ago to the date, we have received SIX inches of rain.

Over a month of going hard, the monsoon season has hit us. WE were extremely dry.

The grasses are loving it and they will be going into the spring in excellent shape.

Learnt many years ago, even if there's 2-3 hours of harvesting in a day you have to jump.

Red lentils finally in the bin. Ran 25bu.

For comparison last year they ran 30 and 35 the yr before that.

Peas sucked, mustard was tolerable, durum looks like it's going to suck.

3-11 so far on stubble.

In laws durum looks like itll average 4-5...

One fella cut 900ac of durum and got a whopping 2400bu total.

Red lentils running single digits.

A segment on here that would rather take a bullet than understand risk over reward couldn't give the answer to what x/x, x+x, x-x, and x.x are.

Is there any reason why we need to give a percentage of what crops are yielding?

Quit giving the crooks any ammunition to drop prices.

50-60% of normal can be a 30-40 bu crop!!

Does Eatons tell Sears their business?

Interesting mention ....both Sears and Eatons were Canadian icon stores....both out of business.

What is really weird is Sears would deliver to the local outlet in our town long before there was an Amazon and they still couldn't get it right.

I live in a 100 year old Eaton home.

Some things are just mind boggling as to how people could phuck up a good thing.

First field of canola was just over 11. Another field in same area will be just under that. At home canola is going in low 20's, not done that one yet. Can have 40 bu/ac and 20 ft away 10. This is on solonetzic ground. Got a bit more rain in the spring at home than on the other two fields. Oats out west where it was the driest will be next to nothing. That was on spring breaking. Any tillage in spring was punished this year as all the seasons moisture disappeared with the tillage. No rain after seeding. Last year 2 feet of rain, this year 2 inches.

I know nothing about Solonetzic soils, but where did the 2 feet of rain go? I would have thought that the subsoil water would be so saturated that you could go a year without rain. Or was it the heat?

I am literally amazed at how our crops performed with no summer rain this year. No rain from first days of July, till late August, yet they all found subsoil moisture except for a few gravel patches. I take for granted that it works the same elsewhere.

There is a retired grain farmer living in the middle of one quarter of barley, flat from corner to corner, including the hills, and still not close to ripe. He told me I need to put on a seminar of how to grow barley without rain, since he knows exactly how little rain it recieved.

Yet I would have thought last years impressive wheat crop had sucked every bit if moisture out of it, with no rain after late July.

Out here our cows are getting protective of what little grass is left. Moved a bunch of pairs yesterday into a new pasture field that we just fenced and got water organized for. They found a swamp donkey in the bush and a mob of angry/curious momma cows chased it over the fence.



Had 1.25 inches this week and at least it waited till after August was over so it doesn’t count towards my lack of moisture insurance for the pasture or corn. Very grateful for that.

Should start combining and swathing canola when things dry up and we finish getting the machines ready. Quite low are my expectations so hopefully they’ll be met somehow.😉

At least we have enough carryover straw and cow chow for the winter so that takes away a lot of the stress. Found enough pasture and grazed most of the hayfields that we might get to the end of the month before the corn is required. No complaints here.

The cows and us will have enough shekels and grub to play the game for another year. Off to go deal with a completely blind cow now………. Life could always be worse.
