    Feed Grains

Just not seeing how corn is coming to Canada in any big way.
Basis is plus .50 to .80 or even higher in the heart of corn country. How is western Canada going to compete against that?

My impression is that the threat of bringing corn in is a tactic used to pressure sales and keep a lid on prices. I hear it all the time. Yes some corn is shipped in but is not the preferred feed and often logistics dont work out as planned and guys get stuck buying spot grain to cover needs at higher prices.

Be very careful, feed lots and pig barns are full of cattle and pigs bought with the assumption of cheap feed grains.

This is not an idle threat. New crop corn is already booked to start arriving in October by the unit train. And it won't be cheap, equivalent of just under $8 barley delivered to end users in southern AB.
But it will be necessary. There truly isn't enough feed grain to go around this year. For the sake of the future of our livestock sector, and future demand for our feed grains, this is a good thing.

Hand to mouth until then, but that will cap feed grain prices from then on. And hopefully end users can survive another year.

Cargill will keep the line running even if they have to own every fed calf a bring in all the feed to finish it.

I assume JBS will be the same.

The real wild card as usual will be China. Have they been kicking the can and lying about their crops and stocks again as usual, and will need to come to the market in a big way again? Brazil has basically no corn for export with their disaster this year.
If the US has a trend line corn crop or less, and we have to compete with China for the exportable bushels, we could still see feed grains go higher yet up here.
Otherwise, the current values ( farmgate) are higher than where they will be once corn starts arriving in a big way.

You’d think supply would be tight, lots of skinny seeds out there.
              Going up every day
              8 bucks now

Wonder how much room they really have to move on quality factors? I've seen some pretty bad stuff accepted and some pretty nice stuff rejected.

Had a rep stop by today and said they are being told to send germ samples away on feed barley as may be buying feed as malt....legitimately this time.

Stock up on beer now. Or everything will taste like Pilsner....

Goes to show how much of a gong show the malt game is most years.

corn will be coming in bigly starting October. The only other solution is to export a lot of feeder cattle which will likely occur as well. Bad situation for livestock on the prairies. Yes it makes them uncompetitive relative to US but no other alternatives out there.

It's cheaper to ship cattle to feed than feed to cattle...politicians are going to learn something about economics and its going to surprise them when they figure it out ...
