    Fall rye

Does fall rye work in saline soils?

    #2
    About the same as wheat.
Not near as good as barley.
Saline tolerant grass/forage mix the only real thing that has a chance in anything more than mildly saline.

When I was young a lot of our cow feed came from fall rye. All solonetzic soils. I guess saline is a little different though. Anyway fall rye was the best bet for a crop that could be harvested with poor soil and dry conditions. Spring rye was second best.

Yes rye does pretty good in solonetzic soils.
Mildly saline it can do ok depending on moisture.
true saline or "alkali" spots it is like wheat.
This year rye seems to have a decent stand but I have not looked close to see what the heads are like.
