It performs better than ours because there are still some elements of free enterprise left in it. Not many, but some. The insurance end of American health care is, however, mostly centrally planned. Mandated coverage for illnesses that you have to buy whether you want the coverage or not. A socialist tort law system which requires doctors to prescribe unnecessary tests out of fear or being sued and otherwise results in massive costs for liability insurance.

As a share of GDP the US medical system costs a whole lot more than Canada's and leaves a very large percentage of residents without adequate insurance or coverage.

Medical bills in the US are a significant cause of personal bankruptcy. If you have chronic health problems good luck finding affordable insurance.

The US medical insurance industry is very fragmented by many bureaucratic insurance companies.

If you are well off and can buy what you want it works fine. But if you aren't, its a shitty inefficient and unfair system.

If you think the US system works better then you can fly down to take advantage of it anytime you want. Take your high limit credit card!
