Saving snow till next ski season, literally

Not ag or marketing related. Just an interesting story.
Finish ski resort last spring packed their snow away for the summer, to get an earlier start this fall.
When I saw the headline, I thought it was a spoof, like the story about burning the snow here on the prairies a few years ago on April fools.

Who would want to save snow, I’m trying to get away from it most winters. This year I have to look at it unfortunately.

You would think it would turn to ice after being packed and left so long? Usually come spring we bust up the piles here to get them gone. We like to put winter in the rear view mirror as soon as possible..............😉

I thought we were supposed to stop using plastic? Now cover the side of a mountain with it?

I have news for the fins, the snow is going to melt under that tarp I am afraid. If global warming is taking out glaciers in greenland what chance does that puny ski hill have?

Also, havent they heard of snow machines?

I found a follow up article. Looks like it worked as planned, opened 2 months earlier than otherwise possible, and while temperatures were still above zero, so too warm to make snow. Trying to make up lost revenue from closing last spring.

We preserved approximately 150,000 cubic meters snow, and of that, we had 90,000 cubic meters left at the opening this weekend.
These guys would be a great help putting up silage piles and covering it.

They store snow over summer at the Canmore Nordic Center.
