Maybe you should tell the entire story such as Japan has one of the highest suicide rates of any OECD country. That the number of suicides in Japan in 2019 (before Covid was) 20,169 and this is down from the 30,000 plus suicide deaths 10 years ago (2010) so the number of suicides this past month are not a whole lot more than what has happened in any of the last 10 years.

And please provide the breakdown between suicides caused by loss of job/income due to shutdown compared to number caused by loss of job/income due to Covid sickness or death of a wage earner or loved one in a family. Until you can provide this comparison you are simply fearmongering.

StatsCan comments on excess deaths in B.C.

      https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/canadians-age-85-and-older-account-for-over-half-of-excess-deaths-amid-covid-19-statcan-1.5205790 https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/canadians-age-85-and-older-account-for-over-half-of-excess-deaths-amid-covid-19-statcan-1.5205790

However, the data reports that B.C. was the only province to record consecutive weeks of excess mortality in August and September, logging 807 additional deaths during this time.

The increase in excess deaths in B.C. may reflect increases in the number of deaths due to accidental overdoses, according to Statistics Canada. The province’s Chief Coroner's Office has reported increases in deaths due to overdoses since the start of the pandemic.

Males accounted for over two-thirds (69 per cent) of this excess in B.C., with men under the age of 65 accounting for approximately one-third of deaths. Over that same period, B.C. reported less than 40 COVID-19 deaths.

StatCan says these figures are an important indicator of both the "direct and indirect consequences” of COVID-19 and the health measures put in place to help address the pandemic.

Call it what you want - I take it as a warning sign. It reminds me of how I felt during BSE - helpless, hopeless, and hung out to dry.

Quit blaming Covid for fentanyl and other opioid overdose deaths.

The list of recommendations made by this same health unit for accommodating drug users is long, including not having charges laid for engaging in currently-criminal activity.

And yet the fatalities grow at a staggering speed.

But don't go for an "illegal walk".

Who are the crazy ones that are driving normal people over the edge?

I doubt any off those opioid/fentanyl deaths were intentional by the user. Fentanyl is very dangerous.

I am not arguing that things aren't out of wack, everything from what you're pointing out with hypocrisy regarding shut downs and lock downs to fúcķen safe drug injection sites.....almost subliminally validating drug use in the hopes it saves lives or doing it under supervision lessens the financial burden on the rest of society.....hoping the addict will somehow break and recover from their addiction.

There is a crisis in BC, maybe, just maybe that fentanyl and opioid crisis took a little longer to reach us.

I'm not going to get into a debate over the numbers game that likely no one can definitively verify.

                Chicken or egg?????

I would guess that in most cases the drug abuse is but a symptom of the individual's deeper problems.

"most cases" around here would put a very heavy discount on that guess.

Choices are made in spite of known risks.
