Seed tax

When will the industry realize the people who pay for this are the only voices that should be heard. Seed companies and breeding institutions have zero say in the process. Farm income dropped 41 percent last year. Stop trying to ram this down our throats.
They wonder why we don’t care Syngenta had no support. There marketing plan was no good to start with. Trying to railroad producers into no keeping there own seed.
The industry is in for a wake up call. They wonder why we don’t trust them. Should be simple to see what happened to our canola seed prices. You would have to be blind not to see the red flags up as they are trying to do the same thing with all crops. We can’t let that happen. Need to keep the control in the producers hand and not the people who line there own pockets. If you are not a producer keep your mouth shut!

Again... What will kind of a return does seed research bring back to the farm gate?

With depressed prices, is increased yield potential without SIGNIFICANTLY more efficient use of nutrients and water a winning strategy? And even if they manage to come up with a magic seed that can grow 50bu/ac on 100lb of 34-17 and 2" of growing season rains, what ability will we have to keep that in Canada for OUR benefit? All the sudden near barren african savanah can grow top quality, high bushel wheat... What happens to prices?

With no REAL demand for QUALITY, lets say they can develop the perfect non-weathering variety that produces 300+ falling numbers with little visual characteristic decay, and 14% protein after inches upon inches of rain? Again, what market would be looking to supply, and if we found a niche, what ability would Canadian farmers have to keep that trait strictly for Canadian users to supply said niche?

Unless Canadian farmers can hold the rights to said seed traits, why the hell are we being asked to underwrite the research?

Seed growers, research companies etc, should learn the time honored tradition of living within ones means! It's supply and demand! If the market isn't phucking asking for it, whey the hell are they spending the money trying to develop it? If all they're doing is "tinkering around the edges", and producing varieties that have 0.1% higher protein, or 2g/hl higher test weight, or 3% higher than check yield rates, it's no wonder the market could care less about seeding brand new certified genetics every single year!

And don't forget even if farmers embrace new seed technologies to grow more and better....who is buying it....man who is moving it. ...there is a rail shit show still to come...

Both Moe and Marit have said second biggest crop with 7 percent still in field and the infrastructure can't handle it with 49 boats at the west coast....

Who is paying everyone else in the industry bills
...farmers eventually pick up the tab....

I am not holding out a lot of hope. For the liberals either.
It was just a thought.

The seed co.s have deep pockets for lobbying.
And when they get it all locked up.
Farmers will reimburse that expense a thousand times till eternity.
I will be out of the business before the worst of it hits.

I just find it incredibly scary.

Once the farmer has his seed , you clean it and send
Your check to the seed co. Or get deducted off
Every bushel at the elevator. Every year.

They do not need the seed growers to collect for them
Anymore.

Any owned free use seed you have right now .
Is all you are ever gonna see.

Some recent wheat, peas , lentils etc..and
The odd 30 year old canola varieties.
That is it.

You will buy a yearly right to use agreement for
Your seed .
And you can never use it even if the patent expired.
Because you never owned it.

If there were 30-40 companies truly competing.
It might work fine .

Kind of looks like all the fancy new and expensive wheat variety's have some of the lowest falling numbers. They should be all rated for failing number in the seed guide.

Canterra markets ACC Connery and it is very hard thrashing so the Canterra rep tells me its a trade off...

" Its hard thrashing but keeps its quality in poor weather " Then he tells me " We have growers that have left it out all winter and it will still grade a 2 in the spring" This sound good to gullible me so i pay good money for Connery and for two years running low falling numbers!
Its a good variety with short strong straw and a good FBH rating but if you can't get a decent falling number its not worth much.

I suggested in early fall that the CGC or wheat commissions should be tracking and studying FN by area and variety. Not in mandate!!
