Heads up for those with crop out...

Hey, I was able to combine standing wheat yesterday day in spite of four plus inches of snow. Areas that had snow went through fine as it is cold enough.

Today I am going to try oats which are a fair bit more lodged. Will see how it goes and post back here later.

Just saying give it a go it may surprise you like it did me...

Was it standing pretty good though? I'd like to try but mine is 3/4 flat with snow on top, now today is above zero so may turn snow to ice.

Standing wheat here is shorter than combined stubble beside it.

Wheat was standing good. I avoided really snowy and flat areas.

Just came to eat lunch after trying the oats. Same thing. I am doing it and heck with the consequences.

I did try an area that was completely flat and converted in snow. It is minus nine today. My trouble is the snow is ending up in the tank, not blowing out. Might open sieves and take side screens off so fan can work better. Snow is sure not melting going through.

Fortunate it was a cold snow, and windy, so not much stuck to the crop but shook through. What will really be bizarre is if I drop straw and bale it. That will look *****.

If you want to see snowed under canola use same picture just switch crops.

Interesting around here - one or two neighbours working away every hour they can taking the crop off a little at a time, making ruts to start with but now its frozen just avoiding the stuff that's under water or under hard snow. Then there are other guys that haven't turned a wheel since the big snow came. I heard a rumour today that MASC is just going to write off crops without a requirement to harvest as there are so many claims and no way they can get them all assessed. If this happens who comes out best - those that tried to harvest the crop or those that didn't?

N of Wadena, standing Canola being straight cut, Fosston standing Oats being combined as I type. Moral is DON"T swath, could be combined if snow is NOT too heavy. Worked for our wheat two years in a row, stayed #2. If goes FLAT swathing will not make a diff.

                    Sad but true.
They’ll make you wait till spring and string you along till you go crazy.

Just heard a second hand report that there are producers in the peace region that never even got started harvest. Is it really that bad in places?

Cousin only had canola, never got under 14, hear stories of larger farms with less than 100 acres in, late green crop and rains or snows 3 times a week.

But they aren't in an equal position are they? If one person incurs the cost of a difficult harvest surely they should come out ahead of the guy that doesn't try? If they make up the person who didn't try as hard to the same financial reward as the guy that did that would be an awfully unfair, socialist system would it not?

grass , the thing about crop ins is that if you use it , you lose it. like any ins if you make a claim it really goes against your premium charge. we don't use it unless its big like in 15 when we got flooded. maybe those guys not trying are just saying to hell with it and going to wait until spring ? some guys around here have had some really good surprises in the spring the last few years
but to answer your question , no you are not rewarded for "trying harder" , same as the nurse or teacher that doesn't phone in sick twice a month and quits receiving sick days when they are "topped out" , and they don't even acknowledged or thank them when they retire with max sick days
