In the early 80's when I was in Australia they had said the average shearer expends as much energy in a day as running a marathon. This world record holder expended twice that. Pretty amazing.

Also, I remember there was quite a controversy about the width of the comb on a shearer. We thought it to quite silly, however it meant fewer shearer would be needed, so jobs were on the line.

How did that all end up Mallee?

It's funny how there seems to be so many different sets of rules and standards on shearing records. The merino fleeces used in this attempt had to average 3.4kgs yet a fellow that I knew in Scotland sheared 589 in a day back in 1996 but they were only 2kgs full fleeced sheep. I read since then a guy in England did 731 in a 9 hour day.
In terms of herculean effort it'll be tough to beat the young Scotsman Grant Hurcolm's 2017 effort where he did 2142 sheep in a 50 hour marathon! Allowing for breaks he still averaged more than 50 an hour but I don't think there would be any fleece weight requirement on that one.

Maybe he just gave the sheep the Irakwa cut. 😂

Found a link to the 731 looked like romney lambs or borders.
          Couldnt find the 2142 though.
There has been several marathons huge totals here as well usually for charity.

Merinos a tad harder to shear than british breeds.

A guy we have in our shed is ranked number 1 to 4 in our state/province and about number 7/8 in australia a machine went he wants to be but when he goes for it over a period of a week or so always succumbs to tendenitis. Pushing the woggle.

Here is one story Mallee, full wooled suffolk in these pictures but I think most were crossbred ewes that would be easier shearing.
