In theory the carbon tax is supposed to encourage us to produce less C02 by using greener alternatives. 1 gigajoule of natural gas produces the same amount of energy as 277 kwh of electricity. I pay $6.98 per gigajoule of natural gas of which $1.517 is carbon tax in Alberta($30 tonne carbon tax). I pay on average $.19 a kwh for electricity. So to produce the same amount of energy in electricity would cost me $52.63 or roughly 7.5 times as much! So to heat my house with electricity would be prohibitively expensive. To make it work electricity would have to be 3 cents a kwh all in. In Alberta the cost of generation is capped at 6.8 cents the rest of the cost is transmission, so transmission alone is 12.2 cents for me.

I am getting a kick out of all the Albertans flocking to support Kenney because of his promise to axe the carbon tax yet on April 3rd he come out in support of carbon capture and sequestration again - a process that is much more costly and less effective than a carbon tax or cap and trade. https://www.thestar.com/edmonton/2019/04/03/ucp-moving-backwards-on-failed-carbon-capture-and-sequestration.html https://www.thestar.com/edmonton/2019/04/03/ucp-moving-backwards-on-failed-carbon-capture-and-sequestration.html
And this is not the first time he has supported carbon capture. I remember he made similar comments back in February. But if the UPC climate change plan is not funded by a direct tax on emitters but rather the costs are hidden in government spending and deficits (that must still be funded by the Alberta taxpayer) it must be acceptable.Last edited by dmlfarmer; Apr 5, 2019, 08:46.
