Making our own diesel from straw

A German company, Choren, is close.

The processes work on a smaller scale...

Produce syngas from the biomes, then use the Fischer-Tropsch process to turn the resulting gas into diesel fuel.

I would think that the resources would be better used on setting up solar panels to power small N fertilizer plants. Over the course of a year the sun could produce enough energy to get a farm or farms needs of N from the air. Maybe not practical on a farm scale, but perhaps it will be practical for a group of farms to build.

You can create NH3 from air.

However, in a few years we won't need to produce N anymore.

Plant and bio technologies will take care of that for us.

It's an emerging space and lots of money is being invested into it, especially in emerging markets (Russia, Argentina, Brazil)

We've got that already - they're called legumes.

I hope you are right Klause, would be nice to save 50-60 bucks an acre on nitrogen

Exactly, things are about to change dramatically.
The big push for max N fertility and variable rate micro management of everything to the inch is about to change .
It is not remotely sustainable. Especially now with the carbon tax attack.

Not gonna happen, big ag input companies wont let it happen, all succesful research will disappear. Only way it will be allowed to become mainstream would be your same 50-60 spent as a TUA, input cost etc. Or more likely,a 60 -70 dollar cost and then a manufactured crisis in shortage of the traditional N.
