Before we convict all the Liberals ...

As much as I enjoy watching the self righteous, liberals being hoisted by their own petard after spending so much effort trying to claim the moral high ground and preaching their agenda, and as much as I hope this results in the current leadership being removed, and possibly jailed, we should look at the other side too.

It was just bad ( good?) timing that this blew up under their watch and not the other guys. Or perhaps the amateurs in this administration just weren't competent enough to keep this covered up effectively. But it is likely safe to say that the behind the scenes maneuvres would have taken place regardless of who was in power. Best to remember that corruption is how business and politics gets done in Quebec, and work in corrupt failed state dictatorships such as Libya, nothing gets done without corruption and bribery. Perhaps holding a business to Canadian ( supposed) moral and legal standards when they are trying to do business outside Canada is essentially locking us out of most countries in the world. So unless we want to claim the moral high ground and not play in anyone else's sandbox, this dirty business/politics perhaps we need to turn a blind eye. Just because these guys got caught this time, certainly doesn't make it an exceptional event.

Secondly, now that it is coming to light that Liberals were also connected to covering up bribing Natives in the pipeline scandal, that is so common, it shouldn't even be a news story. That is business as usual, extortion by natives has been going on for decades. It has recently taken on more authenticity as they use environmental claims and use lawyers and politicians, but the extortion, particularly of the energy industry is nothing new, and is well known. Throwing it in the face of the liberals, certainly helps to destroy their last shreds of credibility and shows their extreme hypocrisy, but if anyone wants to open that Pandoras box and expose it to the public, it will get messy in a hurry. Not very many businesses, native leaders or politicians will escape that with a clean record.

I think we can lump End point royalties into this file as well.

Nobody forced SNC to do business in Libya. That was their own choice. They chose poorly.

Sure natives extort the govt one way or another, but the thing about that article is the US took notice and that have a law against that sort of thing that could cripple us.

I think your right on the mark. This has potential to get way way bigger than people realize. Each party has this kind of dirt in the other when it gets to the point it’s all over expect some similar examples come out across party lines. Will this lead to cleaning up politics somewhat?

I've been completely skeptical about JWR from the start of this mess. She's a whackadoo. Its quite possible that everyone in this mess is telling their own truth. JWR may have felt and actually been under pressure. She may have been moved out of the AG position for simple incompetence at the PM's first opportunity to do so without making it too obvious what he was doing. The Libs may still be planning to pardon SNC but just waiting until this mess dies down a bit. Its likely OK for governments to try to influence this kind of prosecution albeit perhaps not exactly the way this bunch of nitwits did it.

The only comfort I take from the whole fiasco is that the PMO clearly couldn't manage a one horse parade. Someday this should make a case study in how not to manage a crisis. Their actions have been at best stupid and their communication has been comic. I hope the Liberal brain trust does as good a job of managing their election campaign.

Wernick went to the attorney general to tell her the importance of SNC to the economy but that isn't pressure and it is not to be used as a determinant to the DPA....

                This is a corrupt government...period.

It took enough Canadians almost ten years to tire of the last Guard on the Hill, hopefully the current Guard gets booted off the Hill this October.
