    Power outages

Snowstorms have knocked out our Hydro here a couple times, 8 or 9 hours, which isn’t long but anywhoo thought I’ll set up my portable generator 9 kw so I can start it if we get a major outage. Generator ha 120 and 230 output, have used it before to back feed 120v. But have a 230/240 outlet I could backfeed. Do I need a transfer switch for protection when Hydro resumes, have not used one previously.

By law you must have a transfer switch or isolator interlock (cheapest) or simplest is the one that replaces your meter (sask power will supply a farm one for $700) but will not supply urban or towns . In town it will cost you $1100 plus install
Many people do not know that your transformer will turn 220 volts from your generator into 13000 vac , if main breaker isnt turned off
Many around here just backfeed through a 220 volt plug and shut main off. Dont think its legal though

This breaker box can be wired for ether bonded or floating neutral generators.

and this plug will turn any generator into a bonded neutral generator.
