And the Trump administration actually acknowledged this and did something about it. It will be interesting to see what happens as they lose their prime source of funding and legitimacy. Does the UN double down and the rest of us have to pay much more to make up the shortfall, or do they become irrelevant, or better yet, do they get back to what they were originally intended to do?

The UN lost its relevance after the US occupation of Iraq. The majority of member nations were opposed but the USA did so anyway.
