I think reserves are noxious to the indigenous peoples. In many cases they helped new settlers but the also burned some at the stake and enjoyed running the gauntlet games.
To say they occupied or owned land is a bit of a stretch. Much of their culture was based on stealing from one another. They did not even have the wheel.
Much is offered or given to them now, but it would be better if they joined our society.

There was no oil or potash mines when my Grandparents came to Saskatchewan either. Agriculture and settlement drove the prairie economy. All of that was impossible without access to farm land that was once occupied by first nations.

There is s good argument for resource revenue sharing with first nations based on their original ownership and occupation.

Most First Nations people currently have lower incomes, lower life expectancy and a lower standard of living, especially those living on reserves.

I think it is important to recognize first nations contribution to Canada's history and development. Current generations are working and paying taxes off reserve just like everyone else.

It is difficult to find employment near or on many remote reserves as there are few jobs. Just like small towns many of the young people leave for better opportunities.
Agree with you last part ... to a point .
There are 7 reserves around this area , lots of employers looking for good workers. The jobs are there for those willing to work regardless who they are or where they come from. It’s the will that’s not there for the most part because there is monthly free money coming in from tax payers . Those that have to work or have the will to work can find jobs , and good ones anywhere around here ... that’s a fact

A good example of that is the huge amount of workers that were flown into Ft Mac on a weekly basis . Shortage of local people willing to work .

Perhaps a little pain for alot of gain?
Brilliant strategy to stop the human trafficking of children across the southern border not to mention removing the incentive to use children as props to enable access to US social programs. MSM is very quiet on Trumps December 21 Excecutive Order which states the initiative to go after human trafficking. Put yourself in the shoes of the poor human trafficker who has to pretend to be the parent of a small child for months in detention. The unimaginable torture the human trafficker would have to endure manufacturing the facade for that long knowing eventually they could spend the rest of his/her life in prison if his/her ruse is discovered. Finally a the US has a president that has a pair.

Unless your reserve is close to an area with unfilled good jobs, the opportunities for most first nations are limited. If your family has been living off the land in a remote reserve supplemented by social support, a lot of families don't have much experience with a regular job which they can pass on to the next generation.

If you didn't finish high school and get some post secondary training then your value to employers is low unless they are willing to train you. On reserve school systems don't receive as much funding per student as the rest of the school system. Their outcomes are not as good. Parents play a huge role in children's success. Lack of funds limit the ability of students to study and train away from their communities.

Social problems, racism, lack of opportunities are all impediments to employment on and off reserves. Poverty and despair are hard to escape.

Most of us take a lot of things for granted that don't exist on reserves. Our experience as non-first nations people is not relevant to many first nations and most of us don't understand what it is like.

The solutions are not as simple as get a job. But positive change is happening.

Agree on change , but the point is there are lots of jobs around lots of reserves in western Canada , especially NW Sask and most of Alberta ... they do get free post secondary education no ??

Actually a very dumb and cruel strategy is the amount of traffic slowing no it's increasing. This only punishes the legitimate families and their kids. If you don't want them send them home record who they are if you get caught again then yes children split up or whatever

But the traffickers could give a rats ass about the kids or if they get caught it s the risk they are willing to take.

So like most things a very sad pitiful attempt by a squirrel to address a problem. But he could give a rats ass about the children or anyone else for that matter good on some of the republicans to speak up and call it immoral as it was.
Although it is so badly managed that even if intentions are good now they don't know where everyone went. How stupid.

                  Regarding reserves.
                  Newfies dont have reserves.
For some, they have no history of regular work either.
                  They fly to Alberta.
Deed reserve land to the inhabitants.
                  Now truly equal. Simple.

But never going to happen because of chucks reasons being regurgitated ad nauseum for excuse.
