    Destroying snow

Well I will say I am very happy with the above average temperatures that have showed up. Also SF3 may not be that far out with his May 7 start date.
Still think a good chunk of the prairies won't be going till 12-15 or even later but that is a much improved outlook.

Now all we need is the ground surface to dry up and warm up. Water is accumulating in low spots but when the frost comes out I'm confident the water will soak in.

The water just started running over night with still a lot of snow to melt.

My best guess right now would be 15th-20th.

We better put on our big boy pants, seeding is going to be here sooner than we think. If the weather cooperates I fully expect to have some seed in the ground before Schapansky's sale.

Not that unusual to get a May snowstorm in our area, another good reason,
or perhaps the main one, to start seeding in good time.
Used to be that August frost and rust epidemics were big threats to late crops.
Can thank plant breeders for progress in wheat rust resistance.
Remember swathing Norstar winter wheat with stem rust so bad that it built up on Chrysler engine manifold and had to clean off glowing embers before they burst into flame.
Old timer said to cut rusted crop green because rust cut off plant ability to fill seeds and even caused shrinkage to what was already in them. Think he was right.

Hopalong, on the other side of the spectrum we did the same thing with sawfly damage in dry years, it was "cut off " anyway so we may as well have swathed it before too much went down and was lost. Seed sample wasn't very pretty because of prematurely being killed. Adjust the sails to the winds blowing.

Snow nearly entirely gone here. Just a few slivers of what used to be huge drifts left. Guys will be running before May 7 here. We seemed to have skipped spring and went straight to summer. Already tint of green in the fields.

From 90% white two days ago has gone to 5%. A little more runoff than expected. Maybe more reserve moisture than we thought.
Forecast should have us in fields by weekend.
Anywhere in near normal timing and amount of summer moisture would be enough for decent crop.
Dryer year would see something from sloughs and lower land after 20 or 30 year wet cycle.
Disease, frost, hail, insects still a production risk but optimistic.

Full swing seeding before first of May. Frost out 4 inches, now. Big slurp coming in low spots, like quickly. Winter wheat all green, and nicely rowed. Looks like a good one. Extremely little run off with better positioned dugouts full, or nearly full.
