Back to the topic. Was paid ten bucks an acre for area seeded to winter wheat. I guess some see this is a mistake? Same with the forage agreement. If you are seeding down land anyway, why not take advantage of their programs? They do not take control of the land, they just want the habitat for nesting success.

Most farmers sure seem to hate habitat and wildlife. I guess if all that matters is dollars...

I also notice most grain farmers are more virulently opposed to woodlands and riparian areas. Livestock people seem far more open to using the land in different ways, leaving more habitat intact.

And then the grain farmers come to my land to hunt, and wonder why I post it! Lol.

If people want to donate money for duck habitat i have no problem with that. I do have a problem with farmers who talk out both sides of their mouth. When it’s convenient you want the government out of your business but its ok to “take advantage” of DU money (some of which comes from government) if you are growing winter wheat or seeding pasture. Puts you square in ndp camp.

Guess everyone posting on here must be NDP then - bet there isn't one of you that doesn't participate in at least one of Agri-Invest, Crop Insurance or the farm fuel rebate programs.

Good point, I guess we are somewhat forced into these programs to remain competitive with other farmers in the area.

Taking or receiving handouts does not make you socialist, I'd say more opportunistic which is a capitalistic quality. You become a socialist when you advocate for handouts in exchange for slowdown of your operations or conditional on production.

For sheepwheats wheat payment, if all farmers where paid $10 an acre and sheepwheat still seeded his winter wheat and got the same $10, then it would be the NDP way.

I just dont like the attitude DU is ok cause they give me money for seeding winter wheat and grass. Let the market decide what crops we should grow not DU

You really should take the time to find out the following:

Where DU's head office really is.

                Who really funds DU

What your land really has that DU is so interested in.

Please tell us Pars. just so everyone on here knows. Also, when duck sells land in sask. it is allowed to be forever. Alberta is for 10 years.

We had DU come in to manage a valley with a series of lakes 30 years ago....promised the moon ....delivered nothing....now they want out and are leaving the stakeholders shit out of luck....they say they have no money....and won't put it back to where it was before they showed up....

I have to tell everyone here ....the PFRA had tremendous vision....it's too bad they were eliminated....had more value to conservation than anything DU has done....

But PFRA seen a better way because they looked at all opportunities not just conservation....

                      PFRA should be brought back

Interesting questions. DU Canada gets a lot of funding from out of the country and a fair bit of government money as well. I think the obvious answer is they want to control water ..........????

Would be interested in knowing what you allude to with your questions.

Me too! Curious how accepting cash from their programs is evil somehow. Oh, your going to seed down land to hay? Here, we will share the seed costs, because nesting habitat in grain farming regions is scarce.

I read the fine print, and there is nothing sinister. They have no land control over me at all. Just an agreement to leave it seeded down for up to a decade, less if you wish. Du does not own much land anywhere near here, so maybe I am missing something?

They only buy land that farmers are willing to sell.
We sold them 120 acres of water..Never will be farmed..They paid all legal fees/sub division ..All surveying..We kept the 40 acres of high land for farming..They paid us the average rate in the RM which most is good quality farm land..Got the remaining 40 acres free...Bought it just before we sold it..Think we got a good deal..
