Where to start on barley varieties. Have grown Metcalfe and Copeland. Don't stand worth a shit unless 50 lbs of nitrogen or less. Decided growing malt was a waste of time. Have grown Coalition, decent barley, yields goods, stands not to bad. Grew Austenson a couple years, decent barley but when it goes down it goes flat. My favourite barley is Thompson. It will stand with 75-80 lbs on N. Straight cuts nice, only drawback is it will be very short in a dry year.

Was at Ag-Expo this week in Lethbridge and today there were bids for feed barley laid into Picture Butte at $5.50/ bu.
CDC Austenson has been one that is popular out this way as it produces well on irrigation and dryland, and feedlots really like the plump kernel. CDC Thompson was one that was hard to beat except it would dive yield-wise with any stress, but when things were right, man could it yield well.
