Interesting. Canada imports over half the lamb we consume. I like being part of that market. Feels nice to feel needed!

After your info on wool, I dug deeper, and found some really great Australian production websites, so I thank you.

That's a remarkable drop off in beef consumption in Australia compared to the other meats, don't think i've seen quite that same contrast anywhere else.
What is the demographic of lamb consumption of sheepmeat in Australia or Canada? are young people eating it and in Canada are there young non-ethnic consumers eating it?
In the UK they were saying nobody under 45 was eating it 20 years ago and despite a lot of marketing efforts aimed at younger consumers I don't think that's really changed.

In Canada there is definitely an ethnic factor. We market to south African doctors, for example, east Indian dentists. Richer people definitely eat more lamb we find as well. Some market to muslims and jews. Typical old stock folk do not eat a lot of lamb, they are too cheap and beef is good enough!

It’s a cultural thing. Got talking with an Indian fellow in the local subway about goat. Started telling me how they made goat leg soup back home. He was just about tearing up talking of how his mother made it for him.

only 74mill sheep nowadays were there 170 million 40 yrs ago, and most is exported explains decline i n lamb and mutton

pork industry has very clever and good marketing campaigns.

australia used to be famous for "sunday roast lamb or mutton" but modern days guess people dont bother except for special occasions. Its still a ritual here a roast once a week sometimes twice in winter, Lamb beef mostly but at time chicken and pork

Peta have some heavy advertising at times which cause consumer drop off in ensuing weeks.

One thing which is rare here is turkey and not much duck eaten eiother

The trend likely similar to graph here too. Biggest reasons are price and preparation time. Pork and chicken cook faster for people's busy schedules and are cheaper meat than beef and lamb. Even ground beef that used to be family staple meat is often more expensive than buying pork chops or chicken breast. Steak or lamb chops is double or more the cost for the same meal. Some genuinely can't afford but most is more about choices of where to spend your money in a keeping up with the Jones kind of world. The latest phone, newest car, most exotic vacation all trump spending income on food. Ethnic guys will spend large percentage of income on eating the lamb or goat they want especially surrounding certain religious holidays.

Also enough negative pr about red meat and health issues more so in urban crowds.

I will confess I'm a meataholic, I'll pull up the slack in Canadian consumption and eat more!
