Listening to Goodale today ...it's funny to hear him say how important the US farm organizations are to helping keep nafta but the liberals don't give a shit about farmers in Canada.

Looks interesting and some issues seem similar in both countries.

Trump mentioned his administration has started deregulating, dealing with EPA, FDA and getting water off farmland.
New farm bill being worked on with significant crop insurance.
Farmers will be able to write off an equipment purchase in one year now. (Should increase equipment sales)
Eliminated death tax to make passing on farm easier.
Signed two executive orders to improve rural internet/broadband service.

Trump Briefly mentioned NAFTA is challenging to get a deal. Sonny Purdue mentioned dairy and poultry are an issue with Canada.

Are usa farmers still heavily subzidized or its being scaled back?

Presume some eu countries especially france still the leader in reiciving payments.

There is a good interactive map showing global subsidies by country at:

                      http://www.oecd.org/tad/agricultural-policies/producerandconsumersupportestimatesdatabase.htm

A few surprises for me - like the levels that China and Indonesia subsidize their ag sectors.

Total Support Estimate 0.42 % of GDP
Producer Support Estimate 10.7 % of GFR
                        Agriculture in GDP 1.8 %

                        Context

Canada is a large, wealthy country with a small population relative to its area. Primary agriculture accounts for less than 2% of GDP, but is important in some of its regions. Canada is a large net exporter of agricultural products, which account for more than 10% of total exports, and market access to export markets is a significant issue for the sector. More than half of Canada’s agriculture exports are destined to the United States. Crop production is concentrated in the western prairies, where the typical farm is twice as large as the national average, highly productive and produces largely for export. Most milk production is located in Eastern Canada, which has relatively smaller farms and a larger variety of crops. Red meat industries (hogs and

Total factor productivity (TFP) growth is driving agricultural output growth in Canada. TFP growth averaged 1.3% between 2004 and 2013, below the world average, and output growth averaged 1.4%, despite a declining use of primary production factors. TFP has slowed relative to the previous decade, largely as a result of widespread adverse climate conditions. The majority of Canada’s agro-food exports target processing (around 55%), forming part of another country’s production system. On the other hand, agro-food imports are overwhelming final products for consumption.

Canadian agriculture benefits from relatively abundant resources (e.g. water), and agricultural output growth has been achieved with minimal increased pressure on natural resources. Nutrient surplus intensities at the national level are close to the average for OECD countries, as are GHG emissions. Agriculture’s share in energy use has increased, but remains above the OECD average.
