    Grain handler spending

Farm Credit says grain handlers are spending big to increase our export capacity.
This may be what U of S professor Richard Gray wanted when he was telling us how much money growers were losing during shipping problems with 2013-14 crop.
FCC article repeats idea world demand will call on us to produce more.
Kind of goes against notion that we should produce less to increase prices.

The system is moving maybe 700000 tonnes a week ......on a 60 mmt crop in western Canada ...the math isn't working....hasnt been for years and mostly to the grain cos favour....and of course the the blackmailing by the railways will continue.....

The system has to get to 1.3 mmt tonnes of movement per week to follow trend line yields. ...

    Naive....dumb****led farmer...tm.

I know locally here there has been big money spent by certain grain and pulse players.
Somebody is making a pile of money or plans too.
It will be interesting moving forward how primary producers fit in . With J/T's tax changes and the blame game of the FSU flooding the market with massive volumes of cheap grain , not sure what to think .
This year seems to be a bit bewildering, blame the Russians for everything lol ...
      Well and Trump .
Meanwhile at home our own PM is hitting the red button on family farms in western Canada .

Right now the biggest bottlenecks are export terminals and transportation infrastructure.

Primary elevators have been getting additional storage added on over the last 10 years with many doubling there original capacity.

Now export terminals are being upgraded/newly built to match this.

Still leaves one thing. There is only one tunnel to the Vancouver ports that can only handle I think it's 8(not 100% sure on exact number) trains per day due to the buildup of carbon monoxide in the tunnel and needing to air it out.

Once we see that infrastructure get improved we will see a increase in shipping capacity from primary elevators.

Not a bad thing at all.

Furrow what's your take on the Maymont plant? Should make NB area sit up and take notice, or not-see Bucket's post above

I think they are going to get that "dead " area from Maymont north to Shelbroke.
It is a big area and most years highly productive .
Cargil and Viterra got a lot of grain from that area .
It will be good for farms east of NB .

Should get rid of overtime costs for Cargill and Viterra. lol

If they do get up and running on time , this winter for sure will be the time to be patient in this area .
P&H is doubling their capacity right now as well . Although with a pit that unloads just a 3 ton it may take till a year to fill that place once they finish lol

Why can't the grain cos make it so a B train can unload without moving.....they sure follow trends of the farming community don't they? ...

I just find it very bizarre that they spend a fortune on extra capacity there now for the third time but have not upgraded a pit that is as old as the original elevator lol
I guess they believe that farmers and truckers have nothing but time on their hands and love sitting in line ups for hours 🙄
