Who said government doesn't support farmers? Here's proof!

I got off on a tangent on google and ended up searching for agriculture in NWT and Yukon. I remember reading that government was offering money for people to farm in the territories, and I wondered where and what type of farms. I found this article from 2013:

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/bud-the-spud-moves-up-north-farmers-battle-permafrost-to-make-a-go-of-it-in-the-northwest-territories

With a story that proves the government really does support farmers. This family has received $10000 towards their farm in Inuvik. And for this trivial little investment, they have expanded their farm up to two goats, five rabbits, nine hens, one rooster and five chickens. That is only $454 per unit of livestock. A bargain for the taxpayers if I ever saw one.

It would be interesting to know how the rest of the $1.2 million per year gets divided amongst the estimated 20 producers in the territory. I won't even do the math on that one.

So to all of you who complain about the ineffective support programs, you are obviously doing it all wrong, perhaps a change of address might help too.

And this was in 2013 under the conservatives who supposedly gutted the farm programs, this proves otherwise, the programs were alive and well, generously funded and prioritized perfectly.

IN light of this, it would be interesting to see the numbers for support of Eastern and Quebec farmers vs. western farmers. I'm sure they are available, anyone have a link?

Bloody ridiculous!!! For 1.2 million they could have brought in a pile of food to the north!

AF5, You might be interested in looking at these statistics giving a breakdown by province and year of "direct farm subsidies"

http://http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/21-015-x/2012001/tablesectlist-listetableauxsect-eng.htm

It's quite complicated what is included and what isn't and it seems to fluctuate from year to year which province spends total and most per farm but it is generally Quebec. In 2010 though Saskatchewan spent the most in total. I found 2006 census figures of farms per province to get an idea of per farm payments.
In 2010 it seems the average AB farm got $11,292, SK $14,748, Que $17,262, On $4084, MB $13,200 etc etc.

Seems to be that ON and Que often get more from Agri-Stability where the prairie provinces get more from Agri-Invest. Not sure why that would be. In 2011 the last year of data, SK farmers got a huge payout - twice the total of Quebec spending largely off the back of Agri-stability and crop insurance payouts.
