How Half Of America Lost Its F**king Mind

This blog post was written by a liberal who grew up in rural America. The post, is about why Trump is as popular as he is. Interesting, especially coming form an urban liberal. The comments following the piece, from his fellow urban liberals, are as insightful as the article itself.

I get what hes saying. Ive said similar myself.
The more droning on we hear in our heads, the more we get the feeling that something feels wrong. No amount of gaslighting can take your sanity unless you let it. The little voice in your head is often right for a reason.
The leftards in this country would all be urban and elitist. I get overwhelmed by their bs to the point it all takes on the same drone.
There are a lot of things Trump is not. Potus is likely one of them. Ive never even really listened to him. But given the choices (in our country or theirs)I'd have to vote for the sob.

Trump appeals to a lot of Americans because they are desperate for some kind of change.

Jobs have disappeared, their standard of living is falling, they can't cope with the pace of cultural change. They are looking for someone or something to blame. Immigrants, minorities, liberal elites or anybody who is different from them or disagrees with their view of the world are perceived as the problem. They feel threatened from the outside and from within.

The real problem is the system is stacked against them . It is cheaper to make cars in Mexico and consumer goods in China. Manufacturing jobs disappear because in a market economy capital goes to where it is most profitable. In a globalized market economy you are competing with the lowest cost producer in the world.

In the knowledge based economy you can be a software computer expert anywhere in the world. All you need is access to education. You can't be part of the knowledge based economy if your parents didn't have enough money to send you to a good college or university. Rural America is not the place where you find good advanced education.

The US economic and education system is full of inequality. If you start poor in America you are going to be poor with a few exceptions. This is especially true in rural America.

Multinational Corporations make sure their profits are made in the lowest tax jurisdictions. They search the world for the lowest cost sites and with the greatest incentives to invest (subsidies or tax breaks). Rural America is not the best place to invest. India and China increasingly have more and better educated, better trained workers who will work for much less.

The rich and powerful have always had more influence in the US. The rich and powerful are concentrated in cities and urban areas because that is where the majority of people live and work because that is where the majority of good jobs are and where all the money is.

Trump didn't get his billions from farmers or rural investments he made his billions off real estate for the elites. He got his start because his family was rich and part of the elite.

American farmers are a contradiction. They believe in small government and the market economy but routinely vote for subsidies and substantial farm programs to keep them in business.

All true. Maybe they dont have as good a wealth "equalization system" as we do.
Maybe our pop so clustered near cities that education still accessable.
Still, the disconnect here is real. Just smaller and easier to shrug off.
