    Another Short Crop 2008

Canada will produce a small crop, this year, weather, input costs etc. combine for a poor Canadian crop, across the board. Agree or disagree? High prices, should get higher. Agree or disagree?

I think Western Canada as a whole will be close to average at best. Alberta looks good but somewhat late. Sask will be all over the map and very late. Manitoba? Looks to be O.K.? Quantity will not be the big issue it will be quality come sept I am afraid. Hay crops in our area are already a write off guarenteed.

my neighbours that have had showers on their fields look o.k. for the time being, but everything looks very late (canola in the early fields are just starting to cabbage). Even if we begin to get heat and a decent system that brings a few inches of rain with it, I think we are looking at about 2/3 of average right now. The cereals are starting to close up furrows on 12 inch spacing, but soil very dry, and will drop the bottom leaves soon. Winter wheat is heading out with 5 - 6 kernels, so it is going to be a disapointment. I think that rain later on will help with the canola yeild, but cereal yeild has already been set, and the potential for some phenominally low yeilds is quickly becoming a reality. Don't price in any more crops for awhile, cause there is going to be lots of upside come mid August!!

        Burbert Ill bite.
Sask Crop Conditions very late. Canola all over the map from just emerging to barely cabbage. No bolting yet from this weeks drive. Lots of flax in ground in a lot of areas and Oats will be down in seeded acreage. Peas are starting to look a little better but not that great looking.
Talked to lots at Farm Progress show and all were laughing a 18 bushel flax crop at 18 $324.00 same as 22 bushel canola crop at $14.72.
That's probably close to what will be the final numbers.
One other thing no one I mean no one has a excellent canola crop.

less than the last 2 years.
          average crop still possible.
the only crop that dosen't have a fall frost risk is peas.
we will need some heat to make up for cold dry start.

SF3, actually your wrong. Central Sask, where I'm at is on pace to grow biggest crop in years. All cereals are stooled out, Canola is bolting, odd flower coming up the shoot.

I wouldn't ask for it any better.

I think things looked good on the way to the Farm Progress Show also. Never seen so many pea crops before, such that I am thinking I should price some more. Wheat was in a crappy looking stage but seems lots of moisture and things are taking off now.

Snappy, I think your on track, but - only 1/3 of Sask is in good shape the other 2/3rds is in trouble. Some spotty rains in our area now though, but only 2 mile wide strips. One thing to remember 1/4 - 1/2 of Sask on average has just emerged, look at the calender!
2/3 Of Sask is some huge acres.CROPS IN SOUTHERN SASK SOULD BE 1/3 THE WAY HOME - NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Sask has half the arable land in Canada.

Snappy when you mean central that's Saskatoon to Regina, or Unity to Rosetown or Melfort to Raymore or Tisdale to Fort Quappelle.
                    2/3 are behind and crappy.
