    long and short?

Could someone please explain what you guys mean by being long and short. I don't know a lot about these marketing terms but am wanting to learn. Thanks.

In a nutshell, being long means you think the price is going higher, and being short you think its going to drop.

If you short the market, you sell futures in anticipation of a price drop, so that you can buy it back at a lower price before the expiry of the contract. If you don’t have the physical commodity in your possession you are “short” of it if you had to deliver on the contract at that future date.

You are long on a commodity if you have a buy position in the futures market, or you have unpriced grain in your bin. You anticipate the price rising so you can sell it for more in the future.

Anything to add to that Charlie and Lee?

Bulls go long(buy the market), bears go short(sell the market).
