    Waterlogged Soils

    After record wet past few years in our area we are left with a lot of slough margins and other areas with high water table. Some have high salinity but most produced good or even best crop in dryer years of past.
    If rest of year stays dry, any consensus on value of tillage versus just chemical weed control?

    Sounds stupid but leave the weeds grow to reduce moisture then just prehavest them.

    I have found keeping it bare is more of a problem than reducing weeds before seed set.

      Wet needs something growing to use up the moisture, even weeds. Salinity grows only a few plant types, rarely grain. Big water is our problem, started in 2010 and still getting bigger. Last fall heavy rains added more.

        Water table will do whatever it wants.

        Growing weeds is likely the cheapest and maybe best solution. Maybe forage of some kind?

          Biggest temptation for tillage is sprayer and other ruts which need filling in and smoothing out.
          Just been looking at earlier seeded crop where low areas were disked and harrowed last fall and quite pleased with way crop looks so far.

            we are faced with the same issue. With the wind this spring we were able to seed parts of fields not seeded since 2009. As things dry up more area are becoming accessible. We plan to burn off what we can and work up the areas to dry them out. We have found that we can then seed those areas with a Valmar on a harrow bar with RR canola and get a crop growing. The salinity in these spots are bad and will take years to fix. I want to tile a lot of these areas when it dries enough.

              The solution to your salinity issues is product called Salt Out. This product sequesters the sodium and chloride ions from penetrating the root tissues of the plant/grass. It also opens up the ground and encapsulates the water particles
              Depending on the TDS, the initial application rate is normally 4 gallons per acre. After two monthly applications to significantly reduce the salinity , the maintenance application is only 2 gallons per acre.

These conditions usually occur due to the buildup of salts as a result of fertilizer applications, irrigating with reclaimed, well or pond water, as well as salts deposited by ocean mist.
              Salt Outâ„¢ coats the plant roots disallowing the uptake of the salts thereby enhancing nutrient uptake resulting in rapid improvement and stabilization of turf color.
              Salt Outâ„¢ also contains a surfactant to ensure proper soil penetration and even moisture distribution throughout the root zone. It reduces water usage by 20% or greater.
