    U.S. Retail Recession

Ugly, ugly numbers now being released by the U.S. retail industry.

Macy's, GAP, Staples, Coles etc. all reporting disappointing earnings. U.S. now in a 'retail recession'. Middle class consumerism on-the-ropes(IMO).

U.S. jobless claims also taking a big hike as well.

U.S. 1st quarter GDP estimated at 0.5%, now slightly less than that of France.

    When will equities react?

US economy does lead the world right now. Just shows how bad everyone else is. This is just the start of the 30 yr depression.

The latest trend in government attitude is toward protectionist policies in regards to trade. I think this points to an extended period of slowing economic growth. Couple this with increasing demand for government expenditures and taxation you have a recipe for even lower growth or recession. At some point the unending accomulation of government debt will come home to roost. Have a good day:-)

Great hope following second world war was to avoid protectionism and depression widely blamed for leading up to it.
Support in United States for protectionism does not bode well for rest of world and those of us who see trade as cure rather than cause for economic depressions.

That's what I gather from economic history too. Trade barriers made the depression of the 30s worse and last longer
