    Volunteer canola

There was some concern on volunteer canola and what to spray ahead of canola and pulses .
But I think between the frost , wire worms , cutworms and flea beattles it won't be much of an issue within a week.
Bugs area out hard very early .

So furrow answer this please. Does delaying seeding canola till let's say May 12 help with flea beetle and cut worm pressure? Or does it matter that much?? Curious as normally we have canola seeded between May 1-5 here. Was ready to start but now getting a lot of wet stuff for next couple days so probly putting it in between 13th-15th.

Absolutely it will because the canola should be growing much quicker and more vigorous - if it don't freeze again on long weekend .
Frost damaged canola sits like a sloth fora good 4-5 days . That's when most of the beetle pressure does damage .
One thing we have learned that if canola has been hit with frost but not wiped out - be on it in 3 days with matador and 2-3 litres of alpine - it will recover twice as fast

90% of bug pressure compliants are with earlier seeded canola that stalls in cool weather .

Let the bugs eat the volunteers, way cheaper. Maybe first flush of beetles be DEAD when canola emerges! They only live 3 weeks, similar to what the treatments last.

Excellent .. That's the kind of response I was looking for. I also like the idea of spraying 3 days after a frost with matador and alpine. Have never been told that little trick. Last 2 times it froze just watched helplessly while flea Beatles ate away at what was left wondering if it even was worth spraying.

Ya , after a frost any seed treatment has virtually no activity until the plant starts to regrow and by that time it's usually too late
