Why do logging trucks need to haul overweight ?

we went several years without a mill in this area after weyerhauser pulled the pin . highways stayed very good . last winter they were hauling logs again and highway 23 is pounded all to shit . I asked traffic cop about it and he was pissed right off at them . he said they get permits to haul an extra 15 k app. (could be wrong on the exact amount) he said it used to have to be minus 6 to get a permit , last winter it got changed to 0 degrees , so if sun is shining , pavement could be 10 deg warmer ! he also said if they don't have a permit , they can just call for one after getting stopped and carry on their way .
my question is , why in the f$&k can't forestry live by the same rules as the rest of trucking industry including farmers ?
asked local mla about it , might as well poured water on a ducks back , he couldn't care less about highways , I guess?
can anyone explain why log trucks need to piss up highways ? was hauling grain today at secondary weight dodging the holes

Probably need to haul overweight just to put a few coins in the driver's pocket. Around here, no young guys haul wood, no money in it. Only guys that do are small owner operator, everything paid for and have more than a few gray hairs.

Or it could be that the mill has a goofy high cord weight to steal wood, so a guy has to load 20 cord just to get paid for 18. Happens here all the time.

Question is not why do they need to, but why are they allowed to? could you imagine the cost saved to farmers if you could haul way bigger loads? Governments of the past had some balls though the old Simpson timber had to build and contribute to roads, now its all given away and we all pay for it. Familiar theme hey caseih?
The left give it all to the unions and the extreme the other way is giving it all to business and we pay.
