That was a joke.

I do recall one big farmer tried 3000 acres of lentils , only 7% of the farm, a few years ago. It did rain about 30 inches that season. They harvested some lentils, but I think that was the fall they bought joker tillage tools.
I am not criticizing the guy, it was a risk management play, it didn't work as planned because of the weather. The SCIC coverage was pretty good.

There is something wrong with SCIC when people consider seeding a crop unsuited to the area they farm....because the payout may be profitable!

That's not what insurance is intended for, that is farming the program... poor management, but hey if they set it up that way...

I agree farmaholic, that is very poor management. I would like to think that most guys would want to keep their operations running sustainable and doing the best job of farming the land. It drives me nuts to know that the system is set up that way because I was not brought up that way, thanks to my dad and past generations.

All my farming years, whenever governments cut back on subsidies there was an outcry from those who benefitted from them and little appreciation from those who paid taxes to support them.
Witness grain transport subsidies, wheat board deficits, land bank write offs, agristability and even tree nursery.
Politicians and governments sometimes seem to ignore moral hazard.

I wish they could take water a bit. We grew in the 80s and up but once moisture returned to normal we were sunk.
