Last year I made 6.8 on some investments pretty risk free. Long term 25 year is over 8%. Rarely negative returns.

If you got some grass and feed you should have put that investment money in cows.I got fed up with my returns about 5 years ago and did that. You want a return anymore a person has to invest in themselves first.

Good point. We did the same, but with sheep. Using land that is not grain friendly.

Does anyone completely go it alone when it comes to off farm retirement investments.

I would think it would require a lot of baby sitting if you played around in the stock market with the entire portfolio.

With a good accountant knowledgeable of the tax implications would you really need a couple of other people("advisors" and "managers") skimming off the top or even dipping into the principle if there are negative rerurns?

When mutual funds became popular there was a fund Company with a neat slogan..."We manage to out perform".

I can honestly say I am not satisfied with the overall portfolio return. For as long as I've been contributing and saving and with the old 7-10, 10-7 adage I thought I should have been further along by now.

That being said, the time and knowledge required to completely manage it myself, would be lacking. So what am I left with?

I truly dream of a pension that could be drawn on by 55-60 years old and never out live it. I guess I should have done something else for a living where that would have been possible. I guess in reality if I didn't give a shit about the next generation it could be possible, but.....

          Any thoughts?

Yup Farma, the old stock market yoyo just keeps skimming off the top. It ALWAYS comes back or higher for a while, however it will all be about the timing of when we NEED the money, just another gamble! Hope it is NOT crashing/recessing/depressing at the time I withdraw.

Credit unions locally are quoting 2.5% for locking it up for 52 months. Around 2% for 18 months.

You probably won't see it freewheat - its a prejudice spread by people with little or no experience of sheep. Sheep put up with a heck of a lot more than cattle and don't show themselves as sick until they are further gone than cattle. All this nonsense around weaning time with cattle and pneumonia - never happens to sheep regardless how or when you wean them.
