Most likely won't resume till next Thurs around here for dry grain , weather looks good for a few days then .

Cold and humid till freeze up will mean NO dry grain in this area. Hell, some fields are swamps and a nightmare to combine already. Oct is usually a salvage month here, see 2009, ZERO combined in Oct , finished in Nov.

An old timer was telling me about his experience working as a hired man on a large farm many years ago.
It was the days of stook threshing with horses and they finished mid afternoon.
Instead of taking the rest of the day off, they hooked horses onto ploughs and started fall ploughing.

In early days of settlement, stack threshing was common.
Sheaves were hauled to yard and stacked to wait for outfit to come and thresh.
Later, when individuals and small groups had their own seperaters, sheaves were stooked in fields and hauled directly to threshing machine with horse drawn wagons or racks.
Then the combines took over during and after the 1940's.
