How is the variable rate seeding looking this year?

We did variable back in early 80s then when the drought years hit we abandoned it. Mother nature either gives you a crop or takes it. Simple fact. Most times its more luck than any thing else.
It depends on the field. I create my
zone based on water flow/erosion. On the
hilly fields it usually works out to
more on the level and less on the
slopes. On flat fields with depressions
alot of times I cut back on the low
spots depending on what the soil test
says. Phosphate is different from field
to field but I don't usually end up
variable rating it anymore. Then I tweek
the seeding rate to help even out
maturity or improve establishment on
week areas. The key is just to balance
inputs with potential and risk.
