Anyone grow Vesper? Sask ag and food says only fair lodging, but other info says
much better than Unity. Liked Unity other than lodging issues. Any experience?
Partners, I got a bunch of it in the bin right now. The main reason
I asked is because it is only fair lodging like unity. BUT, I found
several independent trials which showed lodging as "good", and all
the numbers, ( you know the scale of one to 10, 10 being flat,
etc.), Vesper was MUCH better than Unity. My unity was not FLAT, but
it had a serious lean throughout, and hence caused difficulty in
harvest.
But then one has to think of that wild wind we had, not sure what
wheat could stay up with that!
Glad you are trying some, I feel less like a village nut. I don't
know anyone around here who is growing any.
Yes we had the stupid high wind that put a lean to our Unity too..But the yield potential, and ease of harvesting the bearded wht.is VG. compared to the non bearded..With the fair straw it goes through the combine much better...Even in 2010, with all the rain we were seeing 62 b/a on combine monitor..So if we can get a decent yr. there is potential for a high yield..If Vesper is better..
I went to a trial last summer where Unity had
more of a lean than the other wheat (Shaw) But I
believe their plots had 140 lbs of N.
I am sticking with the midge resistant Unity for
one more year. Last year we put in 85 lbs actual
N with slight leaning and a neighbour had extreme
leaning when using well above 100 lbs.
