    Durum grades

Anyone have any thoughts or advice on the grade received for our durum.

no 4 Canada, surprised it doesn't mention fusarium aside from the DOM

    We are thinking of selling.

    Sorry for test posts.

    Thanks

If you're asking I'll tell you what I think. The falling number is acceptable, protein is kind of low and HVK is kind of low. DON is high.

Marketing the stuff, you could have 5 terminals within 50 miles of your farm. Not all the terminals handle durum and remember those that do may not be looking for it or that quality at the moment, bids will reflect that, so look long and hard and find someone who actually wants/needs it. This isn't the CWB era when the Terminals bought grain on behalf of the Board and sat on it and got paid storage. Times have changed.

    Just my opinion.

Had durum one year when midge damage was becoming an issue.
Grainco sent sample to their office, came back number five due to midge damage.
Local elevator would have given us a three.
Hauled it one hundred miles to get number one high protein, that elevator wanted it to bring up protein on shipment to domestic mill. It was nice looking wheat, think grain commission specs on midge damage were out of line.

With DON levels at that I would guess the fus around 3% which is a percent to high for a 3. I don't know of any elevators having a program for high fuz so will need to be blended. I think you'll make out better selling with new crop and get some before it gets some rain to hold the hvk up. That's what I would do unless you can find an elevator that could blend it to a 3 on a hand shake.

hmmm. The logistics of buying, taking delivery and then physically Blending 30,000 bushels of durum sounds a bit daunting. Do elevators take delivery of both amounts and blend it there?

          Damn fusarium.

this year we are not even spraying our durum...just doesn't seem worth it, but won't add up to anything to blend anyway I suspect.

Keep it and sell in fall. DON wont be an issue in durum this year, graincos might give you better grade as they can blend it away, especially if they are short to fall sales. Shop it around

If you don't spray it, your potentially ending up with another pile of poor grade durum. Spray it and give yourself a chance at least. Based on your comments, I suspect you aren't in traditional durum country so you can't afford not to spray
