What does education really mean today when you can get the sum total of pretty much everything mankind has ever learned on a device that fits in the palm of your hand and it costs next to nothing.

Fransisco: It means nothing. Anything before age 18 has been just glorified babysitting for years. And anything your taught is only that which has the nod of the government of the day.

Bill Gates was a university drop out... He created the most ubiquitous operating system in the history of mankind so far.

A lot of our friends have university degrees... they are working at budget rent a car... receptionist at a mining company. ... meat department at super store..

University education has completely become a commodity.

Doctors lawyers. .. researchers. The the top 15% of students should be going to university.

And they should be focused on learning. Not studying and cramming to pass the next exam.

I agree, many go to university that shouldn't. But if you are going into business or want to get a higher level job in business I think University can give you some valuable tools and broaden your horizons a bit.

This is kinda on a slippery slope. There are a lot of true statements in this thread.

Education should never reserved for the elite, whether that be "smart" or "rich". A lot of potential would get wasted or overlooked.

There are a lot of useless degrees.

Like Bucket said, "The School of Hard Knocks" is likely the best teacher.

There are a lot of very successful uneducated people.

There are a lot of unsuccessful educated people.`

As long as your alive you will continue to learn. Read something, anything. Technology will always give you something to learn.

Education in the early years is the base upon which further education is built, can there be improvements in how it is delivered, likely. Do we need to start pigeon holing, academics versus practical? Aptitude tests should be heeded? Some are better with their hands than their brains.

I never took the opportunity presented to me to go beyond grade 12. I am on the record as "jokingly" saying "school is for stupid people" Of course I don't mean that but it justifies my ego(just kidding again).

If it weren't for education would we enjoy the lifestyle we have today. The one we provide ourselves and aided by other's? I would rather live in a country of educated people that some of the others with less educated. I really think it contributes to our affluence.

                Just my opinion. Take care.

Some of my fondest memories come from my time in university. A university education was mandatory in my home when I grew up and I never regretted one minute of it. I have white hair and am still going to school, most recently in Vancouver. Some people are satisfied to stay on one course for life but that is no longer the norm. Today many people change their occupations several times in their lifetime. Remember life is a collage of experiences, memories and relationships.

The hard knock now is thinking the railways will stop their blackmail of the canadian economy or expecting the government to do anything about it.

Looking back, Ritz could have reversed goodale's order and opened the border.

The government would still have the same issues to deal with today but there may have been at least one entity left that wasn't brown bagging MPs.
