Some day everything is going to be controlled by a Grain Company from Seeding to Final sale.
As the older farmers say F$%K this its a young mans game the tide will shift. IT will be here is our seed we want you MR farmer to Grow. Know your seed is from 2014 that's not up to our standards. You pay 70 a acre but here is a nice spread sheet to read to see how were going to make you money. Build a fertilizer ware house because we have a deal for you on fertilizer May 20th you fert for next year will arrive put in your fertilizer bins and you store till next year. Sign here. Oh yea its on your spread sheet to see how it pays. Ah spray season didn't you read your contract you have to use our spray x. Sorry generic wont cut it. Did you miss the step for seed treatment my god whats wrong with you. Look your crop looks piss poor to neighbours. Your spread sheet will explain how you have to follow all steps to be MR Super farmer.
Harvest is here MR farmer its raining but you should be out harvesting and drying the crop that's part of the contract it has to be a Number #2 to get the premium. Yes I Know its rained for the last two weeks but last Tuesday at 2 in the afternoon the sun came out and you could of went.
Now you deliver the grain from the 1,000,000 Bushel Granaries you built.
The elevator company just couldn't afford to add on to existing elevators so you helped out MR farmer and created their storage.
But as you hit the scale and the grader shows you your sample. He removes his head gear that has super technology to grade grain to a grain of sand.
Its a #3. But no protein oh well the deduction is only the $1.50 a bushel.
Yes I know the spread sheet said you would make a buck. Its next year country.
Oh buy the way our new super seed 2020 is here you have to pick up and pay today. Just stop buy the office.
AH farming how many don't think this is what's going to happen in the future.

Explain what you see happening. I see young guys with no cash that are going to fall into this. But please explain what you see.

Although a little over the top , that is already happening . Cargil and JRI have been using test subjects for the past 4-5 years .

It has been going on for years already.
Owe the grain company enough money your barley will get selected for malt, you will get better grades or better delivery opportunity.

Funny how your pea contract from Dec. that they had special on because they really needed it, can't be hauled in Feb because they have no room. But your March CNL will be called in Feb because they have room and really need it.

In one way or another its certainly happening. Is it the future for everyone? If we let it. Becoming part of a closed production system would be fine if some contract held us all to play fair. I do see that as a possibility for some.
I dont get into deals like you mention with one company but they still gotcha.

What this thread is trying to show is its happens every day. ITs not like the old days at the Friday safety meeting at the elevator deal is done then haul Mon till Thursday before every one else hauls on Friday.
Today its slick We store all grain for grain companies they have no need to build anything were working for them already.

Every line company is trying to push this model , this is no secret. They want 10 big farms under their control and not deal with 150 peasants who's business they have to try to earn.
Will this work ? Well half of these "partnerships" have failed miserably already, so time will tell.

Agree. Last nail in the coffin was the seed thing. Kind of poetic in a way seed killing the farmer.

Its funny to spot these farms isn't it furrow.
In our area All of a sudden bags are cleaned up and trucks are ready and boom grain from all one farm is taken. Then the rest of the farms bring in slowly are canceled etc.
Two years ago when a famous Useless farm owed a large sum to local Terminal guess what Shit Grain was hauled and filled elevator. Hm no coincident.
That is the master plan Im sure every one on here can spot the group that has bought into this. No control of farmer they work for grain company but grain company lets them think their running the show.
Now some times the rest of us really can skin these companies when their protégées cant produce enough to cover their contracts then the call comes can you please deliver to help us fill a train. Ah negotiations begin and that's when a farm can get some nice deals. Over production years stopped that but I think those years are coming to a end. Lower production will help straiten out all this shit show we have in place. If industry doesn't want to change to deal with good production buy building infrastructure to handle the volume. Piss poor crops can help or Realistic goals of Good old 40 bus crops and No the world isn't out of food.

Agree that much of it is already happening but what is good or bad depends on individual opinion and outlook.
Think back to days of unit quotas, international wheat agreement, jack of all trades farmers (and masters of none), grade eight education, wheat pool committees, single country elevator delivery points and more.
Business oriented farm structure is going to have more advantage in future because it will provide more attractive income to everyone involved.
Can see continued presence of way of life farmers who value independence and are willing to take less income but think trend will continue to go other way.

Only thing hop is the Big Corp farms that pay individuals and have structure in place and work with grain companies still are only one to two crop failures away from disaster.
Two years of drought and watch what happens. But 8 years of over production kind of was easy to play.
I do think Family farms have a huge place corp or not. Because these farms are working for one goal their existence. Times get tough shit changes. The others don't see it. Broad ass was prime example still taking a check and their Bankrupt. One earth thought it would work how well did they do.
Time will tell who is right but isn't faming interesting on any given Sunday.

New business models are likely to come forward.
Think of Hutterite driven by something else than their religion.
                              Franchise operations is another possibility.
Have to wonder if present confrontational attitude that exists between some growers and the people we deal with and depend on will continue.
Many family farm operations have superb management and vision and will be very tough to displace.
