    Tempest in a broom closet

Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed the country hours after the attack on Parliament last week. Harper told Conservative MPs Wednesday he was sorry he left them during the attack by gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. (The Canadian Press)

Harper hid in a closet while leaving the Conservative MP's in the room he was meeting them in to take on any gunmen that may break through the doors. Many of those MP's are women.

I guess Harper feeling a little guilty now.

I would imagine Stephen had little choice. His security detail would be calling the shots (no pun).

We were in New Orleans (short holiday) when the attack happened. The Americans there that spoke to us about the incident were amazed at how well spoken, calm, and tough our PM sounded. Obama in contrast, sounded weak, slightly confused and impotent.

Harper was hidden BY someone. In any country on the planet, they would have done the same thing: hidden the leader of the country.

He probably is more human than most other leaders or the cbc will admit, so he feel bad that he had to be hidden during that time.

A security guard was covering the ndp's doorway with his body for petes sake, and nearly took a bullet doing so, and that was Mulcair for crying out loud.

    Protecting leadership is serious business/

Of course they are going to try and keep them safe.

A little surprised the left on here can only find this to comment on. Actually surprised that I've heard no new mention of property confiscation ( guns).

I could only imagine what would be posted on here if it was another party leader that had acted in this brave matter. The self proclaimed "rights" would have there keyboards worn out.

Forage, you are so lame. Everyone would agree that ALL Canadian leaders need protecting regardless of party lines.

The enemy is extremists. No matter race, religion, or gender. Extremists.

What was he supposed to go? Go out in the hall and see what the root cause of the gun fire was? If he would have done that and got injured or killed you'd be talking about how stupid he was for putting himself in danger.

Do you remember the day President Kennedy was shot? What a sitting duck he was! Can't imagine his not being protected. Same for our PM. Protocol would very likely point to " hide him before anyone else".

In the old days the "general" was the man leading the charge in a battle; the captain of the ship was the last one to leave a sinking ship and the hero was the man who put himself in danger in order to try to save someone in trouble. Especially so for women and those less able to protect themselves.

But nowadays it seems pretty easy to spin that to deflect attention in other ways.

Things have evolved; and protecting women and children is probably secondary nowadays. It may even be most about self preservation coming first.

Give it up Lefty, I'm sure Justin and Mulcair went out to negotiate with the shooter as well.

Touchy nerves; must be onto discussing topics close to your hearts.

How about leaving out personal attacks and concentrate on issues at hand?

Perhaps you had better clear your suggestion of removing anonymity with this sites owners before making that change. You might only find yourself talking to yourself. What a moronic statement.

And hiding in a broom closet might be OK if you had room for everyone else too. Doesn't play well with "commanders in charge" though. Maybe its still easy to send military persons into harm's way.

I see your point. He would win the next election if it had been him to take down the gunman.

It wouldn't have mattered which party was in power the PM would have been forcibly jammed in the broom closet. I would suggest that bringing this up originally by ForageFarmer and yet again by oneoff aka jack-off is itself a cowardly act.
What I really want to know is did PM Harper have an iPad purchased with government funds and did the broom closet cost $50,000.

              Oy-oi!

In a forum of supposed thinkers, I'll add vicious to that, that this site pleasures us with, I would believe that bringing up a topic like this would never be termed, "a cowardly act".

Mjolnir sounds pretty Arab to me, and in a battle with definite lines drawn, damned if there aren't more back bullets than front.

Typical of posters on here who support Harper. They either deflect the facts or relate to name calling. Never fails!!

Those of you who came to the defense of Harper's action of ducking and hiding in the broom closet, please reread the second sentence. Harper himself apologized to his MPs for leaving them behind I never made it up. Here's a guy who likes to portray himself as tough on all fronts. He likes to be totally in charge of all situations. The PMO's office is the command center of his government.

In Harper's MIND he realized that by leaving his fellow MPs behind showed weakness that's why he apologized to them.

You think HE made the decision to hide? Ha, Right. And he appologized because he is human, he felt bad that he had to leave his friends behind, just because he is the leader.

A hint for you: CBC news is not balanced news.

You seem to be saying he apologized because he cowardly went and his on his own. Nope, he apologized because any human being would, regardless of the circumstances. I apologize all the time to my wife and kids for being late or whatever, EVEN IF IT IS NOT MY FAULT. It is just the proper thing to do.

Maybe you are the kind who never apologizes. Not surprising.

I think I've got it. Oneoff and Forage (enemies of the state) want the PM to charge into battle like Sam Houston against the Mexicans only to get shot out the saddle.

Then, they could replace one of Canada's greatest prime ministers with one of their leftist puppets (JT or Mulcair). Canada would slide back into that Socialist wilderness where we languished in those Liberal years.

Sound ****oo? Well that's what happens when you rehash a topic that had a fork in it last time. It was done.

For those who have never heard of Canada Press or the National Post or the Globe and Mail; perhaps someday you will run across their reporting on this incident. FYI; those are respected news bureaus and newspapers.

If the CBC also reported; then good on them too.

Abscence of reporting all facets is known by the name of censorship.

Shame on above persons who would promote and condone censorship.

The report I posted was from The Canadian Press not CBC it's right up there in the first paragraph. Not sure how you came up with the CBC.

On a previous tread you were upset that Blackpowder was harsh towards you,yet listen to you. If you can dish it out Freewheat, be prepared to take it next time it comes your way and don't whine about.

                            Braveheart

One of the greatest PM's, your really stretching it now. Please enlighten me what Harper has done in the past eight years that you would bestow the greatness title upon him. I can't wait to read them.

Like I said before you guys love to call names and deflect the facts. Weak
