And I thought there was a shortage of Malt?

Ran into an old buddy that I don't see often enough. He tells me he has some barley that was picked up for malt last year, but could not deliver until oct-nov-dec of 14, fine, he'll sit on it then.

This fall we all are hearing the quality and shortage issues of malting barley. He then shops he's malt around, germ is 98.5% and a couple companies are interested. Now get this, he is being offered the whopping and insulting price of $5.50-5.60 a bushel. Doesn't seem like much I said, thought there was a world shortage of malt. There is he replied, the grain agent he would like and normally deals with told him, this comes from company office, " feed barley is only $2.50-$3.00 and the company feels that is enough of spread between malt and feed they don't have to pay any more.
Asked him whatcha going to do? I'm going too wait n see and keep shopping the shit around he replied! Good luck buddy!
AND that folks is how your malting industry is serving you. Glad I quite growing the stuff years ago!!

MarketLink Brokerage, a division of FarmLink, is originating malt barley on behalf of MaltEurop in Winnipeg. Bids are well over $6/bu delivered currently, for both 2 and 6 row, but the price depends a lot on the quality specs, and your location. Darren Frank is the contact in FarmLink's head office, please call if interested.

well i guess no one should expect to get paid for carrying it over for them ! bins are cheap if farmers have to buy them. what a system ! they were paying $5.50 right from combine here. nice to see that the whole thievin system is breaking down . just keep your bin doors shut as you have been doing as they are not able to hold prices down any longer . our "partners" sure didnt expect farmers to finally wake up .instead of not being able to deliver until spring we have positive basis on wheat just for one example.

              Negative, not positive arbitrage.

Do the foreign exchange on wheat and run your numbers again. It's still a negative basis.

                It's misleading.

It was fine when we had a par dollar. We don't now.

$5:50 for malt is a *** of a lot better than $6 for #1 13 pro HRSW..... No ? Just as much of a shortage
                    IMO , if not more
