Rain Rain Go away come back next July. What a pathetic week of harvest. Friday was good then sat had shower that shut us down. Sunday took Canola and Monday afternoon the Swath Barley was taken. Then Tuesday the mist started in morning, Then odd shower went by then on way home spitting then rain rain and more rain. Some received over 1.5 inches just west of us. We were at 1.2.
So as October begins and now were down to 28 days and counting being at half done is a achievement in this weird fall. In comparison only one guy I know is done with a average farm and one smaller farmer is done but his peas were never harvested. Most are at half or just got their.
Wheat quality on early was poor 2 with protein all over the map. Later is poorer grade with protein all over the map. Swaths wheat has issues I will leave it at that. Geese and water and heat.
Barley early is off with lots of second growth in sample. Late swath came off ok and has good weight looks not bad. Late late is just shutting down.
Oats early that was standing has lots of second growth. If not sprayed out will effect sample. Late sprayed is ready to go after this rain event. Swath has issues now with the extra rain.
Canola is all swath with a few trying the new direct cut L140P. Shelling did take place with excess rain but was minor and will go as soon as wind comes up. Has a place in weather like we are having and on rolly land if you swath. Hills can turn to over 80% and lower areas can be cut later.
Yields simply 22 to 38. Its no 2014 but really if in a half a mile strip your monitor is 0 to 60 and back and forth. Getting 38 is all you can expect.
Flax some early was harvested with very good results. Its no 2013 but really did well in wet conditions.
Soy is in final plump up of seeds that made it. Spraying of Roundup was done to kill wild oats and other weeds in crop. Harvest will happen in about a week and yields should be similar to last year. Needed one more week before the frost.
Peas and lentils that are left are left for a reason. Nothing worth harvesting so may as well let the Geese and ducks eat.
So to sum up the week a rain event on weekend and then Tuesday has virtually stopped harvest in its tracks. Moisture level in ground is approaching maximum. Fall tillage is happening on some farms because the new saying black is back. I have been direct seeding since 1984 and in the 80S it was a very good practice and our organic matter has improved but something with all the moisture is effecting our soil. Fields tilled last fall or this spring have a yield advantage on Canola of 5 to 7 bushels a acre and its a more plump seed. Peas have something that is in the soil that is causing our problems with peas. More than one guy has comented that they stand on a old yard site I broke or where their was never peas for 7 years. Yes were in the black soil zone so moisture retention is not a priority. But for this farmer 2014 fall is tillage so far 3000 acres have been worked, time will tell but have to keep trying every thing to beat this rain one way or another. So as we get more into October and the stress levels climb with no harvest taking place, Remember the market and all involved don't give a rats ass about us the farmer, they just want their share of our work so get it done.
