Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association Endorses International Biotechnology Statement.

    Wheat Growers endorse international
    wheat biotechnology statement.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association has reconfirmed its commitment to the responsible introduction of biotechnology in wheat, as one of 16 signatories to an international statement in support of the technology.

“Canadian farmers have seen tremendous benefits from the introduction of biotechnology in canola, soybeans and corn,” says Levi Wood, President of the Wheat Growers. “We want to gain those same advantages in wheat.”

The introduction of biotechnology in wheat will contribute to a more profitable and sustainable industry as the technology will offer farmers the ability to produce more wheat using less fertilizer, pesticides and fuel. This technology will also lead to new wheat varieties with an improved nutritional profile and a greater ability to withstand environmental stresses such as crop diseases, insect infestations, drought, excess moisture, and cold weather.

The Wheat Growers recognize that biotechnology is only one tool toward improvement in wheat yields and quality. Improvements in germplasm, agronomics and management will also be key to greater productivity and profitability gains in wheat.

“Farmers around the world have embraced biotechnology as a safe and profitable way to produce more food using less inputs,” says Wood. “Our goal is to make sure western Canadian farmers gain access to the benefits of this technology.”

The Wheat Biotechnology Commercialization statement, endorsed by 16 organizations in Australia, Canada and the United States is attached.
