Tom: Maybe our students should be asking for lower tuition rates like in Quebec? Don't we live in "the richest place on earth"?
I find it kind of funny that those old evil empires like Cuba and Venuzuala have free tuition for their students, while our superior captitalistic democracies require our students to pay through the nose?
What is with that? Don't we have a superior system?

Through the nose?! Hardly. If the students have no
skin in the game, why would they be expected to
care about the quality of their education. A person
tends to be a little more attentive to the goings on
around them when their own money is at stake.

FYI - there have been a group of Quebec Professors
campaigning for free post secondary education in
that Province for quite some time and I heard one of
them interviewed on the radio last week and they
are certainly encouraging these students to agitate
for their rights to a free play. If you want to talk
about the cost of post secondary education you've
come to the right person. My daughter got her
BEng. from McGill. As an out of Province student,
her tuition was much higher than either Quebec
students or Foreign students (who were subsidized
by the Feds). But even at that and including living
expenses, it was cheaper than anything in Alberta.
              That was 12 years ago.
To add to the parable, after McGill, she was offered
scholarships to attend any of 4 US universities to
pursue her Masters, 2 being ivy league. She chose
Cornell, got her MA and was then invited to stay
and pursue a PhD program, which she completed 2
years ago. Here is the kicker. Tuition was over
$40,000 US per year fully paid for by the University.
On top of that they paid her an annual living
allowance to be there. After 8 years, came to over
half a million US. Cost to us - $0. They do things
totally different down there and no, there are no
strings attached. Today, both she and her hubby
              are doing research at Princeton.

I saw a story on CBC Naitonal the other night and it seemed that anyone who had a gripe was protesting, not just students.

I bet the crowds would be smaller if it was cold and wet.

                TV loves this stuff.

Maybe I am a little skeptical.

Rockpile...no strings attached???? Me thinks that her excellent marks and level of intelligence got her the free ride. I consider those strings. I have no problem with companies/universities rewarding money for excellence. That it a little different than giving a free ride to everyone just for showing up...actually...I don't believe students don't even have to show up as the cheap tuition has led to a 40% or so drop out rate as well.

Choice 2U, by no strings attached I meant that
Cornell did not require some kind of payback in
employment or tenure upon completion of the
programs. In a way you stated the point I was
making. After you've proven yourself at the Bachelor
level, then the opportunities should kick in which
recognize ability and achievement. I agree with you
                    - the Quebec students have nothing to bitch about
when it comes to undergrad fees. Post graduate
studies X years can get pretty costly though. In the
US much of this cost is funded by Endowments,
Corp support, Govt too, but especially by Alumni.
                    Thanks.

The thing is, Rocky, instead of studying mating
habits of an extinct Persian civilization from
carvings on a wall, your daughter chose a B.eng,
which essentially guarantees an instant job. And
it is one of the more difficult courses, as the
school of Engineering requires smarts plus a
good old fashioned work ethIc. And sound
                      guidance. pars
